For me, being at the Anesthesiology Department at Stolzalpe was part of an elective medical internship. I´m from the Netherlands and could speak some basic German, my speaking level was at about a B1. I was quite insecure about this but in the end I had an amazing time during the internship, I learned a lot, and I was able to improve my German skills as wel :)

All the doctors in the department are incredibly welcoming. I tried to speak as much German as I could but if I didn´t understand them, most of them would be able to switch to English and then explain once again, which was really thoughtful. The language barrier was a bit more noticable with the nurses, but still, we could communicate all the necessary basics, and they were generally nice to me. Lastly, once I expressed I wanted to improve my (medical) German, one of the doctors instantly gave me some of her own medical books to lend and read!

Now, about the medical internship: as a ´Famulant´ you are allowed to do a lot of things yourself (under supervision). For example: intubating, artery punctions and IV-lines. You will also learn a lot about mechanical ventilation and about the meds that are used most often in anesthesiology. You´ll notice that most of the anesthesiologists will happily explain everything they do, and why they do it that way, to you if you ask them. So you will learn a lot regardless, but if you really want to learn as much as you can, don´t forget to just be curious and pro-actively ask about anything you are interested in during the shifs!

Lastly, about the location of the hospital: Stolzalpe is a very small village on a mountain at 1200m above sea level. Murau is the closest place with a supermarket, and it´s about a 10 min drive downhill from Stolzalpe. Buses only go every 2 hours, so I would recommend coming by car. You will stay at the hospital in a room for free, which is nice, and meals are included. Now, if you go: know you´re gonna be at a pretty remote place. That being said, if you like being outdoors: this is a great place for you! You can go hiking, or skiing in winter, or mountainbiking in summer etc. I would definitely recommend going there. There aren´t a lot of places where you´ll look out of the OR-window up to the beautiful mountains like that. And, also nice to know: hospital employees are allowed to use the hospital swimming pool (amazing view included there as well). I myself have skied a lot while I was there. They have a skiing area in the neighbourhood, Kreischberg, which is really quite nice (15 mins by car from the hospital). And if you like the bigger resorts and you brought a car you can also go to: Obertauern, Flachau, Schladming etc.

All in all: a great place to learn a lot about anesthesiology with enough free time to do fun things as well.
