I am a medical student from South Korea, and I did 4 weeks of famulatur in the Department of Neurology at Ökumenisches Hainich Klinikum. For the approval of famulatur, I just emailed Professor Jauß (Chief Physician of the Department of Neurology) about three months ahead, and he replied me back a few hours later. It was easy to communicate with him through email, and he tried his best to make my famulatur at Ökumenisches Hainich Klinikum possible.
People in the Neurology Department are really nice and friendly. Doctors are always willing to help student and take their time to explain about patients, medical procedure, physical examination thoroughly. In addition to that, the whole clinic is specialized for neurology and psychology only. Therefore, you can get a chance to see wide spectrum of disorders in neurology, from common diseases to rare ones. During my famulatur, I learned how to admit the patients, neurologic examination, Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound findings, EEG analysis, EKG reading, how to approach and manage patients with stroke, tremor, dizziness, headache, Parkinson´s disease, Multiple sclerosis, transient global amnesia, radial nerve palsy, abducens nerve palsy and so on. Furthermore, I was able to perform the Lumbar Puncture to real patients. Even though I could not speak German at all, doctors always tried their best to explain it in English so that I could learn a lot from famulatur program despite the language barrier.
The special thing about this hospital is its warm and familial atmosphere. They not only cared about medical education, but also invited me to their party, bowling night after work. Additionally, Professor Jauß is a person who cares about student a lot, and he helped me with everything from the first day I arrived in the hospital to the end of my famulatur program. He also took me to Hainich National Park for sightseeing and arranged Nordic ski as a social program.
For the living information, the hospital offers very cozy and new apartment which is located near the hospital (only 2-3 minutes on foot). They also provide your meals, white coat, accommodation for free, and reimburse 100 euros per week including travel allowance.
I had a great time during my famulatur in the Department of Neurology at Ökumenisches Hainich Klinikum. Ökumenisches Hainich Klinikum offers the best learning environment for studying neurology. So, I highly recommend this hospital for those who want to study neurology more deeply.
